The New York City Department of Education and PROGRESS High School for Professional Careers is committed to providing our English Language Learners with a high-quality education that values their culture and prepares them for success in high school, college, and future careers. We work with our families, communities, and other partners to ensure that students have equal access to programs that help them learn English—and advance in all of their classes, including math, science, and social studies. Our goal is to provide our English Language Learners with the skills they need to become leaders in a global society.
Our English as a New Language program (ENL/ESL) provides instruction in English with support in the students’ home language so that they can learn to read, write, and speak English. Students in this program can come from many different language backgrounds, and English may be the only common language among them. Our curriculum focuses on language acquisition in a student-centered and supportive environment with high expectations for content, skill and language acquisition.

Los programas de inglés como nuevo idioma, los cuales anteriormente se llamaban inglés como segundo idioma o ESL, proporcionan clases en inglés con apoyo en el idioma hablado en el hogar de los alumnos para que puedan leer, escribir y hablar inglés. Los estudiantes de este programa pueden venir de muchos orígenes lingüísticos diferentes, y el inglés puede ser el único idioma común entre ellos.
